Two summaries of Ch one of Turchi’s Maps of the imagination

A summary of Peter Turchi’s book Maps of the Imagination: The Writer as Cartographer. Ch one “Metaphor: or, the map”

Summary One

Circa 250 words

The first chapter starts with a brief history lesson of Maps.  Turchi ends this first section with the sentence to ask for a map is to say tell me a story. He then goes on to explain how writing is often discussed as two separate Acts though in reality they are intertwined.  the first is exploration the drafting of a piece. The other one is presentation creating something for the reader to enjoy. The next thing he talks about is Artistic creation and how from the beginning with creation myths to more modern-day stories such as Robinson Crusoe He explains every story is creating a new world and everyone’s world is different from the next authors. Next he talks about how you have to explore the world you’re creating and how that can often help push the limits of what you thought your world was Through all this is trial and error and mistakes this is just part of it. He then talks about about having perfectionism becomes Hindering to the creation as you are obsessed with getting perfect but you never will At the end of the day every writer has to know that  they will have something else to offer to other writers he becomes a guide for those starting exploration so it becomes this cyclical piece almost. Turchi Ends this chapter with a little bit about himself and what the chapters that follow contain and at the end there’s a brief blurb about another Explorer exploring the Atlantic even before Columbus. It’s in there as a push to always keep exploring there’s always unexplored trails.
